Hibiscus Lemonade Recipe
Hibiscus Lemonade is a refreshing drink made by steeping dried hibiscus flowers or tea bags in boiling water, then mixing with fresh lemon juice, water, and sweetener. The steeped tea is cooled and combined with additional water and sweetener to balance tart floral flavors. Served chilled over ice, it offers a bright, tangy beverage with a distinctive hibiscus floral note.
Ingredients
- 6 cups water divided, filtered
- 3 teaspoons dried hibiscus flower 3 dried hibiscus flowers or 3 hibiscus tea bags
- 3/4 cup lemon juice fresh
- sweetener simple syrup, sugar free alternative like monk fruit or stevia, honey, maple syrup
Instructions
- Boil three cups of water in a medium saucepan.
- Remove boiling water from the stovetop and add the dried hibiscus or hibiscus tea bags. Let steep for 5-10 minutes.
- Strain the tea over a large bowl, cool and then place in the refrigerator to cool.
- In a large pitcher add the remaining 3 cups of water and sweetener. Mix together.
- Once the hibiscus tea has cooled add it to the pitcher with the water.
- Add the fresh lemon juice and stir ingredients.
- Serve over ice and add a slice of lemon.
Notes
- Dried hibiscus flowers can be found in Latin or Mexican grocery stores or ordered online.
- Hibiscus tea bags can replace dried flowers and require no straining after steeping.
- Fresh lemon juice is preferred for the best flavor, but bottled juice can be a substitute.
- If using sugar, add it to warm water to help it dissolve completely during steeping.
- Steep hibiscus for 5 to 10 minutes depending on desired strength and the product's recommended steeping time.
- Serve the lemonade chilled over ice with a lemon wedge garnish if desired.
