Hibiscus Lemonade Recipe
Description
This Hibiscus Lemonade recipe starts by boiling water to steep dried hibiscus flowers or hibiscus tea bags, extracting a deep ruby-colored tea with floral and tart notes. After steeping for 5 to 10 minutes and straining (if using flowers), the tea is cooled thoroughly in the refrigerator. It is then combined in a pitcher with more water, fresh lemon juice, and a sweetener of choice such as simple syrup, honey, maple syrup, or sugar-free alternatives.
The resulting lemonade balances the tart hibiscus infusion with acidity from lemon juice and sweetness from the sweetener. Serving over ice provides a cooling effect making it suitable for warm weather or as a tangy refreshment. Garnishing with lemon slices adds visual appeal.
Dried hibiscus flowers can be sourced at Latin or Mexican markets or online. Tea bags offer a convenient alternative needing no straining. Fresh lemon juice is preferred for flavor but bottled juice can be used if required. Using warm water when adding sugar helps dissolve it fully during steeping.
Steeping times vary with hibiscus type, generally between 5 to 10 minutes, influencing intensity. The drink is best served soon after cooling for optimal freshness and flavor.
