Homemade Air Fryer Hash Browns

Homemade Air Fryer Hash Browns use shredded russet potatoes seasoned with olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, then air fried until golden with crispy edges. Rinsing and thoroughly drying the potato shreds removes starch, enabling crispiness. The potatoes are packed evenly in the air fryer basket for thorough cooking without flipping.

Ingredients

  • 3 large russet potato
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 370°F.
  2. Scrub potatoes clean under water and pat them dry. Using a box grater, carefully shred the potatoes. Add them to a colander and run the shredded potatoes under cold water until the water runs clear (about 10 – 20 seconds).
  3. Transfer the shredded potatoes to a wad of paper towels or a clean dish towel and firmly press them dry, squeezing out all the excess liquid. For the crispiest hash browns, make sure the potato shreds are as dry as possible.
  4. Transfer shredded potatoes to a mixing bowl and add olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  5. Spray the inside of your air fryer basket with avocado or olive oil spray. Add seasoned shredded potatoes and use a spatula to spread and press the shreds into an even layer across the basket. The potatoes should be “packed” and NOT loosely spread about the basket.
  6. Spray the top with extra avocado or olive oil spray and air fry for 12-16 minutes, until golden with crispy edges. No need to flip. Every air fryer is different, so check at the 10-minute mark.
  7. Remove from the air fryer and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use avocado oil, melted ghee, or melted butter as alternatives to olive oil if desired.
  • Do not use fresh minced garlic; garlic powder prevents burning during cooking.
  • Rinsing shredded potatoes under cold water removes starch, essential for proper crisping.
  • Frozen shredded potatoes can be used without thawing, seasoned as fresh and cooked similarly.
  • Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket; cook in batches if needed for even cooking and crispiness.
  • Diced onions or bell peppers can be sautéed before mixing into shredded potatoes for extra flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days and reheat in the air fryer or oven for best texture.
