Homemade Air Fryer Hash Browns
Description
This recipe for Homemade Air Fryer Hash Browns starts with shredding large russet potatoes, rinsing them under cold water to remove excess starch, and pressing them dry to promote crispiness. The shredded potatoes are then tossed with olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper for seasoning.
The seasoned potato mixture is firmly packed into the air fryer basket lined with oil spray to encourage even browning and crisp edges. Air frying at 370°F for 12-16 minutes crisps the potatoes without the need for flipping, resulting in golden hash browns with crispy edges and tender centers.
Optional vegetable additions such as diced onions or bell peppers can be cooked separately before mixing in to add flavor and texture variety. These hash browns are best enjoyed freshly cooked but can be stored refrigerated and reheated in the air fryer or oven to maintain crispness.
Using frozen shredded potatoes is a convenient alternative to fresh, seasoning them similarly and cooking without thawing first. Avoid overfilling the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crisping.
Ingredients
- 3 large russet potato
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat your air fryer to 370°F.
- Scrub potatoes clean under water and pat them dry. Using a box grater, carefully shred the potatoes. Add them to a colander and run the shredded potatoes under cold water until the water runs clear (about 10 – 20 seconds).
- Transfer the shredded potatoes to a wad of paper towels or a clean dish towel and firmly press them dry, squeezing out all the excess liquid. For the crispiest hash browns, make sure the potato shreds are as dry as possible.
- Transfer shredded potatoes to a mixing bowl and add olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Spray the inside of your air fryer basket with avocado or olive oil spray. Add seasoned shredded potatoes and use a spatula to spread and press the shreds into an even layer across the basket. The potatoes should be “packed” and NOT loosely spread about the basket.
- Spray the top with extra avocado or olive oil spray and air fry for 12-16 minutes, until golden with crispy edges. No need to flip. Every air fryer is different, so check at the 10-minute mark.
- Remove from the air fryer and enjoy!
Notes
- Use avocado oil, melted ghee, or melted butter as alternatives to olive oil if desired.
- Do not use fresh minced garlic; garlic powder prevents burning during cooking.
- Rinsing shredded potatoes under cold water removes starch, essential for proper crisping.
- Frozen shredded potatoes can be used without thawing, seasoned as fresh and cooked similarly.
- Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket; cook in batches if needed for even cooking and crispiness.
- Diced onions or bell peppers can be sautéed before mixing into shredded potatoes for extra flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days and reheat in the air fryer or oven for best texture.
