Homemade Cherry Pie Filling

Cherry pie filling is so easy to make from scratch with this easy homemade recipe!

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar or more to taste
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
  • pinch salt
  • 1 ⅓ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 5 cups fresh sweet cherries pitted
  • 4 drops Red food coloring optional

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch and salt. Add water and lemon juice and bring to a boil, while stirring, over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the cherries, reduce the heat to a low boil and cook for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until thickened, stirring often.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in food coloring if using.

Notes

  • Makes 2.5 cups of pie filling. This recipe will replace 20oz canned pie filling. 
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract can be added with the water.
  • Store pie filling for 1 week in the fridge.
