Homemade Refried Beans Recipe
This homemade refried beans recipe cooks finely chopped onion and garlic in oil, then adds cooked beans with seasoning before mashing to a preferred consistency. The beans develop a smooth texture with mild seasoning, suitable as a side dish or filling. It allows flexibility to season further and customize with optional ingredients like jalapeño or spices for added depth.
Ingredients
- 2 cups beans Use black beans, pinto beans, or bayo beans with a little cooking liquid, cooked
- ½ cup white onion finely chopped
- 1 garlic finely chopped, clove
- 2 tbsp. neutral cooking oil regular or olive oil, generic cooking oil
- black pepper a pinch
- salt ½ tsp. plus to taste
Instructions
- Chop the onion. Finely chop the garlic.
- In a medium-sized pan, heat the oil to medium and add the chopped onion. Cook until the onion becomes transparent.
- Add the chopped garlic and cook for 1 minute. Do not allow the garlic to brown which will give it a bitter taste.
- Add the cooked beans with a little bit of the cooking water plus the salt and pepper.
- Cook for 2 minutes before mashing.
- Mash the beans to the consistency you prefer.
- Cook for 5 minutes stirring continually.
- Turn off the heat and allow the beans to rest for 3 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Store refried beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.
- Reheat gently in a pan over low heat, adding water if the beans become dry; microwave reheating is also convenient.
- Reduce cooking oil by 1 tablespoon if you want to lower the fat content without compromising flavor.
- Customize flavor by adding minced jalapeño, cumin, chili powder, Mexican oregano, queso fresco, or fresh cilantro according to preference.
