Homemade Simple Syrup Recipe
Homemade Simple Syrup combines equal parts granulated sugar and water heated just enough to dissolve the sugar, then cooled before use. It results in a clear, sweet liquid used to sweeten beverages and cocktails without graininess. This basic version is straightforward to make on the stovetop, requiring no boiling, which helps maintain clarity and purity of flavor. Simple syrup is convenient to have on hand for sweetening cold drinks or desserts.
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar (see note 1)
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved (do not boil).
- Remove from heat and cool completely. Pour into a sterilized container and store covered in the refrigerator.
Notes
- Use regular white granulated sugar for consistent results.
- Maintain a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water for basic simple syrup; use a 2:1 ratio for a richer version.
- Store the syrup covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 weeks; discard if the syrup becomes cloudy.
- Adding 1 tablespoon of vodka before refrigerating can extend shelf life to about 3 months.
- Sterilizing storage containers helps keep the syrup fresh longer.
