Homemade Simple Syrup Recipe
Description
Homemade Simple Syrup is made by gently warming water and granulated sugar together until the sugar fully dissolves, without bringing the mixture to a boil. This syrup can then be cooled and stored in the refrigerator for easy use. The 1:1 sugar to water ratio creates a balanced sweetness that blends smoothly into drinks and recipes. Avoiding boiling keeps the syrup clear and free from crystallization. The recipe provides a versatile and fundamental sweetening ingredient for cocktails, iced teas, or desserts.
The syrup keeps well when stored in a sterilized container in the refrigerator, lasting 3 to 4 weeks before needing to be discarded if it clouds. Adding a tablespoon of vodka before refrigeration can extend its shelf life up to three months. Sterilizing containers also helps maintain freshness.
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar (see note 1)
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved (do not boil).
- Remove from heat and cool completely. Pour into a sterilized container and store covered in the refrigerator.
Notes
- Use regular white granulated sugar for consistent results.
- Maintain a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water for basic simple syrup; use a 2:1 ratio for a richer version.
- Store the syrup covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 weeks; discard if the syrup becomes cloudy.
- Adding 1 tablespoon of vodka before refrigerating can extend shelf life to about 3 months.
- Sterilizing storage containers helps keep the syrup fresh longer.
