How to Freeze Tomatoes (the Easy Peasy Way!)

This guide demonstrates a straightforward method to freeze whole fresh tomatoes for long-term storage. After washing and drying, the tomatoes are first frozen individually to maintain shape and prevent clumping. They are then transferred into freezer bags, and the air is removed by submerging the almost-closed bag in water or using a straw for suction. This technique preserves tomatoes for up to a year, making it simple to store excess harvest or bulk purchases.

Ingredients

  • tomato enough to fit in your freezer bags, fresh
  • freezer bags
  • a straw not necessary

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Wash and dry the tomatoes.
  2. Place on a freezer-safe tray and freeze until firm.
  3. Place as many tomatoes into a zippered freezer bag (do not use a non-freezer bag).
  4. Close the zipper almost to the end then choose 5 OR 6 below.
  5. Place the bag into a bowl of water (being sure not to let any water enter into the bag) which will push out the air, then close the zipper completely. This is the best method.
  6. Insert the straw into the bag and suck out the air from the bag and quickly finish closing the bag at the same time. This will remove more air which will help keep the tomatoes longer.
  7. Place in the freezer for up to a year.

Notes

  • Use ripe tomatoes to ensure better flavor and texture after freezing.
  • If using a straw to remove air, use the same end for multiple bags to maintain hygiene and avoid contamination.
  • Do not blow air into the bag as it introduces bacteria and reduces storage safety.
