How to Soft Boil An Egg

Mastering soft-boiled eggs involves simmering medium-large eggs gently for about four minutes to achieve a tender white with a runny yolk. This technique includes immediately cooling the eggs to stop cooking, resulting in a nicely set egg cap that can be easily removed. Serving the eggs seasoned with sea salt and black pepper alongside toasted bread strips makes a simple and satisfying dish.

Description

How to Soft Boil An Egg shows a straightforward approach for cooking eggs with a delicately runny yolk and lightly set whites. Starting with boiling water slightly cooled to a gentle simmer, eggs are carefully lowered in and cooked for exactly four minutes. Cooling under running water promptly halts cooking to preserve texture. The eggs are served in egg cups with their tops gently tapped off, allowing easy access to the soft interior. The addition of freshly cracked sea salt and black pepper enhances the egg's natural flavor.

The accompanying toasted bread strips offer a slight crunch and a means to scoop or dip into the yolk, completing the experience. This method is adaptable for egg size, adjusting cooking time by about thirty seconds for smaller or larger eggs to maintain consistent results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 egg medium-large

To serve:

  • sea salt to taste, freshly-cracked
  • black pepper to taste, freshly-cracked
  • bread cut into strips and toasted

Instructions

  1. Fill a pan with water and bring the water to a boil. When the water boils, add 1 teaspoon of optional vinegar if you want, and lower the heat to a gentle simmer.
  2. Place the eggs on a slotted spoon and carefully lower them into the boiling water, anmd simmer for 4 minutes.
  3. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and immediately place under cool running water to stop the cooking process.
  4. Transfer the eggs onto the egg-cups. To remove the cap, gently tap around the top with a dented knife or use an egg-cutter. Season your perfect soft-boiled eggs with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy straight away with toasted bread on the side.

Notes

  • Adjust cooking time by 30 seconds less for small eggs or 30 seconds more for large eggs to achieve the perfect soft yolk.
