Ingredients

  • 3 cups broccoli florets trimmed and washed
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • butter salt and pepper for serving, optional

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Place a steam basket or colander into a large saucepan.
  2. Add broccoli and enough water to cover the bottom of the saucepan.
  3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer.
  4. Cover and cook 5-7 minutes or until broccoli is tender-crisp when pierced with a fork.

Notes

  • Prep the broccoli by cutting it into florets. You can eat the stem too, peel of the woody exterior, the lighter green interior is delicious too.
  • Ensure the water isn't touching the steamer basket.
  • Steamer baskets are inexpensive (around $10), easy to use, and are adjustable to fit almost any pot size. No Steam Basket? No problem! This recipe will still work if you do not have a steamer, simply add ½" water into the bottom of a saucepan. Drain well after cooking.
  • Steam can be very hot and easily burn when removing the lid (stove top or microwave). Be very careful to open the lid away from yourself.
  • Check if your broccoli is ready by inserting a fork into it to check how tender it is or taste one floret to see if it's cooked to your liking.
