Indian Tacos

Indian Tacos are made by frying soft dough circles called fry bread until golden and puffed, then topping them with seasoned ground beef, ranch-style beans, fresh vegetables, cheese, and sour cream. The combination yields tacos with a crispy yet tender base and savory, rich toppings offering contrasting textures and flavors. This recipe brings together homemade fry bread and flavorful taco components for a hearty, satisfying meal.

Ingredients

  • For the Fry Bread:
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup water warm
  • cooking oil for frying
  • For the toppings:
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 Tbsp taco seasoning or a packet
  • 8 oz taco sauce
  • 1 Ranch Style Beans 15 oz, canned
  • ½ lettuce head
  • 2 Roma tomato diced
  • ½ red onion Diced
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 ½ cup cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cilantro chopped, bunch

  1. To Make the Fry Bread:
  2. In a medium size mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt and baking soda. Slowly stir in the warm water into a dough forms. Gradually add in the water until the dough is form (you may not need all the water).
  3. Let the dough sit for 5 minutes.
  4. Then roll the dough out slightly and cut it into 6 pieces.
  5. Then roll out each piece into a ½ inch thick circles.
  6. Heat 3 inches of the oil in a deep pot. Fry the dough circles in the oil until the dough is golden brown and poofs up slight. Then flip the dough to fry the other side.
  7. Set the fried dough on a plate lined with paper towels.
  8. To Make the Toppings:
  9. Brown the hamburger meat in a large skillet over medium high heat. Then stir in the taco seasoning and ¼ cup of water. Simmer uncovered for 4-6 minutes until the seasoning is thoroughly combined.
  10. Heat up the ranch style beans in the microwave until heated through.
  11. Then it’s time to assemble the tacos!
  12. Top each fry bread with the taco sauce, then the meat mixture and beans. Then top with your favorite toppings: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, cilantro and sour cream!
  13. Serve immediately and enjoy!
