Instant Pot Pot-in-Pot Rice (Pressure Cooker)
This Instant Pot Pot-in-Pot Rice recipe shows how to cook basmati rice using a pressure cooker with the pot-in-pot method. The rice is rinsed and cooked in a bowl placed on a trivet above water in the main pot. This technique allows rice to cook gently and evenly with optional additions like ghee and salt for flavor. The natural pressure release after cooking helps achieve tender, separate grains without sticking, making it a reliable method for perfectly cooked rice alongside other dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup basmati rice rinsed
- 1 cup water for cooking rice, see notes
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
- 1 tablespoon ghee optional, or oil
- 1 cup water for main pot with trivet
Instructions
- Wash the rice and drain water. Put the rice in a bowl. Add 1 cup water for cooking rice in the bowl. Optionally, Add salt and ghee/oil if you prefer.
- Add 1 cup water to the main insert of the pressure cooker. Place trivet in the main insert. Place the bowl with rice and water on the trivet.
- Close the lid of the pressure cooker with vent in sealing position. Set in pressure cook or manual mode for 6 minutes at high pressure. (Note: if using a glass bowl, cook for 9 minutes at high pressure)
- When the pressure cooker beeps, do a 10 minute Natural Pressure Release, which means release the pressure 10 minutes after the beep.
- Fluff the rice and it is ready to be enjoyed.
Notes
- Adjust water ratio to between 1:1 and 1:1.5 for softer rice according to preference.
- For pot-in-pot cooking, use a stainless steel bowl; if using glass, ensure it is oven safe and increase cook time by 3-4 minutes.
- This method pairs best with entree cook times between 5 and 12 minutes to avoid overcooking the rice.
- The recipe was created with a 6-quart Instant Pot DUO60 model; results may vary with other models or sizes.
