Irish Coffee
Irish Coffee is a warm cocktail combining hot coffee, brown sugar, and Irish whiskey, topped with softly whipped heavy cream. The cream floats on top, creating a light, creamy layer contrasting with the robust coffee below. This drink is served as a comforting beverage, highlighting the whiskey's warmth balanced by the sweetness and creaminess.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup heavy cream chilled (see note 1)
- 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey (3 tablespoons, see note 2)
- 1-2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 4 ounces coffee hot (see note 3, freshly brewed
Instructions
- In a small bowl, add heavy cream and beat until soft peaks form, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- In the bottom of a mug, add whiskey. Add brown sugar and stir to dissolve.
- Top with hot coffee. Pour the thickened cream over the back of a chilled spoon so it floats on top of the coffee.
Notes
- Use heavy cream with 50% to 60% fat and whip to soft peaks so it floats properly on coffee.
- Preferred Irish whiskeys include Killbeggan, Jameson, or Paddy's for balanced taste; avoid sharper brands like Bushmills if possible.
- Ensure coffee is very hot to fully dissolve brown sugar.
- This recipe yields one drink per batch and is best prepared individually for freshness.
- Use an Irish Coffee mug or a clear glass to showcase the drink's layers.
