Irish Coffee

Irish Coffee is a warm cocktail combining hot coffee, brown sugar, and Irish whiskey, topped with softly whipped heavy cream. The cream floats on top, creating a light, creamy layer contrasting with the robust coffee below. This drink is served as a comforting beverage, highlighting the whiskey's warmth balanced by the sweetness and creaminess.

Description

Irish Coffee mixes hot, freshly brewed coffee with Irish whiskey and dissolved brown sugar for an evenly sweetened base. The heavy cream is whipped to soft peaks and gently floated on top of the coffee using the back of a chilled spoon, producing a layered drink. The whiskey choice influences the drink’s profile, with Killbeggan, Jameson, or Paddy's providing suitable smoothness and flavor balance. The cream adds a velvety texture contrasting the strong, sweetened coffee.

This preparation yields a single serving best enjoyed warm as a relaxing drink. Using an Irish Coffee mug or a clear glass enhances presentation and enjoyment. The drink is ideal for occasions when a comforting, spirited coffee is desired.

Freshly whipping cream to just soft peaks is essential so it flows lightly and rests on the coffee without mixing in. The coffee must be hot to dissolve sugar fully, and the drink is not intended to be made in large batches.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream chilled (see note 1)
  • 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey (3 tablespoons, see note 2)
  • 1-2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 4 ounces coffee hot (see note 3, freshly brewed

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, add heavy cream and beat until soft peaks form, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. In the bottom of a mug, add whiskey. Add brown sugar and stir to dissolve.
  3. Top with hot coffee. Pour the thickened cream over the back of a chilled spoon so it floats on top of the coffee.

Notes

  • Use heavy cream with 50% to 60% fat and whip to soft peaks so it floats properly on coffee.
  • Preferred Irish whiskeys include Killbeggan, Jameson, or Paddy's for balanced taste; avoid sharper brands like Bushmills if possible.
  • Ensure coffee is very hot to fully dissolve brown sugar.
  • This recipe yields one drink per batch and is best prepared individually for freshness.
  • Use an Irish Coffee mug or a clear glass to showcase the drink's layers.
