Irish Soda Bread
Irish Soda Bread combines flour, baking powder, baking soda, and caraway seeds into a dough enriched with cold butter, sour cream, and buttermilk. The dough is formed, scored with a cross, and baked to a golden crust. This bread has a tender crumb with subtle caraway aroma and a soft crumb from the use of sour cream and buttermilk.
Ingredients
- 4 cups flour
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon caraway seed chopped
- ⅓ cup butter (cold)
- ⅓ cup sour cream
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 ¼ cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375℉.
- In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and caraway seed.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or whisk until thoroughly combined.
- Mix in the egg, sour cream, and buttermilk until you have a sticky dough.
- Pour the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until soft, adding more flour as needed.
- Place dough into a 9-inch round pan (I just used a glass pie pan) and cut a deep x in the center.
- Bake for about 40 minutes or until a nice golden brown. Brush top with a little melted butter. Cool at room temperature.
