Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread combines flour, baking powder, baking soda, and caraway seeds into a dough enriched with cold butter, sour cream, and buttermilk. The dough is formed, scored with a cross, and baked to a golden crust. This bread has a tender crumb with subtle caraway aroma and a soft crumb from the use of sour cream and buttermilk.

Description

Irish Soda Bread uses a combination of flour, sugar, leavening agents (baking powder and baking soda), and caraway seeds for a distinctive aroma. The cold butter is cut into the dry ingredients creating a texture that is tender when baked. The addition of sour cream and buttermilk contributes moisture and acidity, activating the baking soda to create a light crumb. The dough is kneaded gently on a floured surface before being shaped and scored with a deep cross. Baking at 375°F produces a golden crust with a moist interior.

The bread is traditionally served at room temperature and can complement meals or be enjoyed simply with butter. The use of caraway seeds provides a signature flavor character distinguishing this bread.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seed chopped
  • cup butter (cold)
  • cup sour cream
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375℉.
  2. In a large bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and caraway seed.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or whisk until thoroughly combined.
  4. Mix in the egg, sour cream, and buttermilk until you have a sticky dough.
  5. Pour the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until soft, adding more flour as needed.
  6. Place dough into a 9-inch round pan (I just used a glass pie pan) and cut a deep x in the center.
  7. Bake for about 40 minutes or until a nice golden brown. Brush top with a little melted butter. Cool at room temperature.
