Jalapeno Mezcal Margarita
The Jalapeno Mezcal Margarita is a smoky and spicy cocktail crafted by infusing mezcal with fresh jalapeño slices. This infusion provides a balanced heat paired with mezcal’s signature smoky flavor. The margarita combines this infused mezcal with fresh lime juice, Cointreau, orange bitters, and a touch of honey, served over chopped ice with a chili salt rim that adds a savory and spicy accent to each sip.
Ingredients
for the jalapeno mezcal:
- 2 cups mezcal I recommend Sombra if you want a more pronounced smoky flavor.
- 6 lices jalapeño cut 1/4" thick, fresh
for the chili salt rim:
- 2 tablespoons kosher salt
- 1 tablespoons chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper ground
- ⅛ teaspoon chipotle powder
- black pepper a few grinds, freshly ground, coarse/larger grind
- lime fresh wedge
for the jalapeno mezcal margarita:
- 2 ounces mezcal prepared jalapeno
- 2 ounces lime fresh squeezed juice
- ½ ounce Cointreau
- 3 to 4 orange bitters drops
- ½ teaspoon honey
- ice chopped
- lime for garnish, fresh wedge
- jalapeño for garnish, fresh, slice
Instructions
- for the jalapeno mezcal: Pour mezcal into a pint jar or other glass container. Add jalapeno slices and cover. Refrigerate overnight and then remove jalapeno slices. Leave jalapenos in longer for a spicier mezcal. This will keep well in the refrigerator for a couple months.
- for the chili salt rim: In a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients. Transfer to a small plate. Run the cut side of a fresh lime wedge around the rim of a 10 ounce glass. Dip wet rim into chili salt. Set glass aside. Chili salt will keep well in an airtight container for a few months.
- to create the jalapeno mezcal margarita: To your prepared glass, add jalapeno mezcal, lime juice, Cointreau, orange bitters, and honey. Stir vigorously with a mini whisk until honey is incorporated. Add chopped ice to fill glass and a give a little stir to combine. Garnish with a lime wedge and jalapeno slice. Enjoy!
Notes
- Jalapeño mezcal infusion can be adjusted by the length of jalapeño steeping—from overnight for gentle heat to longer for stronger spice.
- Chili salt rim mixture keeps well in an airtight container for several months, making it convenient to prepare ahead.
- Stir the honey thoroughly to ensure it is well incorporated for balanced sweetness.
- Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor balance in the margarita.
