Ingredients
For Pasta Frolla
- 250 g flour 1 ⅔ of “00” flour
- 100 g granulated sugar ½ cup
- 120 g butter ~1 stick - unsalted and cold
- 1 egg medium size, at room temperature
- ⅙ teaspoon fine salt
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon vanilla pod pulp and seeds of 1 vanilla pod or the zest of ½ organic lemon, both are optional
- powdered sugar for decoration
For the Filling
- 2 tablespoons jam strawberry or the taste you prefer
- 2 tablespoons cocoa cream spread (e.g. Nutella)
- 2 tablespoons white chocolate cream spread
Instructions
The pasta Frolla
- In the bowl of your stand mixer combine the chopped butter, sifted flour, egg, sugar and baking powder. Flavor to taste with the grated zest of half a lemon or the seeds of the vanilla pod.
- Start the stand mixer at medium speed for about 30 seconds with the leaf attachment to mix all the ingredients well. Then insert the dough hook to knead until a firm ball of dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured pastry board. Compact the dough ball well with your hands. It should be smooth and homogeneous. Wrap the pasta frolla with a sheet of plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 1 hour.
- After the resting time has ended, roll out the dough with a rolling pin to a thickness of ½ cm (0.2 inch) on a lightly floured work surface.
The Shape
- With the largest cookie cutter, cut out as many hearts as possible until you run out of dough.
- With the smaller cookie cutter, cut out half of the cookies in the center.
The Baking
- Place all the heart-shaped cookies (whole and cut out) on a baking sheet covered with baking paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (356°F) for about 10-12 minutes.
The Cookies
- Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. Then sprinkle them with powdered sugar.
- Spread 1 teaspoon of your chosen filling (jams or creams of different flavors) over the whole heart-shaped cookies.
- Overlap the carved shortbread cookies onto the whole heart cookies with the filling in the center.
