Ingredients

  • 1 onion finely chopped, small
  • 2 tomato chopped small, medium
  • 1 cucumber chopped small, large
  • 4-5 radish chopped small (optional, red
  • 1 green chili finely chopped (remove seeds to reduce heat if needed)
  • 1/4 cup cilantro packed chopped
  • 1/4 tsp salt or more
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper or more freshly ground
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper pure red chili powder, or more
  • 1 tsp lime juice or more; or lemon juice; freshly squeezed

Instructions

  1. Chop the onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, wash and drain well. * Add to a bowl.
  2. Add the veggies and the rest of the ingredients to a bowl. Taste and adjust salt and heat. Serve.

Notes

  • Soaking chopped onions in water for 15 minutes reduces sharpness for a milder salad flavor.
  • Adding chopped mint or a pinch of Indian black salt (kala namak) can enhance the salad's flavor profile.
  • Substitute lime juice with vinegar if desired to vary the acidity.
  • Mixing in non-dairy yogurt and ground cumin creates a raita-style variant suitable as a cooling side.
