Kachumber Salad - Cucumber Tomato Onion Salad Recipe
Description
Kachumber Salad is a simple combination of finely chopped fresh vegetables including onion, tomato, cucumber, and occasionally radish for added crunch and color. The fresh green chili adds heat, which can be adjusted by removing seeds. A light dressing of lime juice, salt, and ground spices such as black pepper and cayenne pepper brightens and seasons the salad. Chopped cilantro gives a fresh herbal note.
The onions can be soaked in water before use to mellow their sharpness, making the salad gentler in flavor. Variations include adding chopped mint, Indian black salt (kala namak), chat masala, vinegar instead of lime juice, or a spiced yogurt mixture for a raita-style dish. These variations highlight the salad's versatility in Indian cuisine and adapt it to different flavor preferences.
This salad works well as a refreshing counterpoint to spiced main dishes, grilled meats, or rice meals. It offers crisp textures and vibrant flavors that complement heavier or richer components of a meal.

- 1 cucumber chopped small, large
- 4-5 radish chopped small (optional, red
- 1 green chili finely chopped (remove seeds to reduce heat if needed)
- 1/4 cup cilantro packed chopped
- 1/4 tsp salt or more

- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper pure red chili powder, or more

- Add the veggies and the rest of the ingredients to a bowl. Taste and adjust salt and heat. Serve.
Notes
- Soaking chopped onions in water for 15 minutes reduces sharpness for a milder salad flavor.
- Adding chopped mint or a pinch of Indian black salt (kala namak) can enhance the salad's flavor profile.
- Substitute lime juice with vinegar if desired to vary the acidity.
- Mixing in non-dairy yogurt and ground cumin creates a raita-style variant suitable as a cooling side.
