Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper can be doubled for a spicier sauce
  • ½ teaspoon dry mustard
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • ½ cup apple juice
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • cup molasses

Instructions

  1. Cook onion in hot oil for 5 minutes. Add garlic for 30 seconds. Add tomato paste and spices and cook for 2 minutes, stirring, until darkened to the color of a brick. Blend sauce after simmering.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and heat over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Blend until smooth with an immersion blender or in an upright blender, if desired.
  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
