Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 medium yellow onion chopped (about 1 cup)
- 4 garlic cloves minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper can be doubled for a spicier sauce
- ½ teaspoon dry mustard
- Pinch of cinnamon
- 2 cups ketchup
- ½ cup apple juice
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup dark brown sugar
- ⅓ cup molasses
Instructions
- Cook onion in hot oil for 5 minutes. Add garlic for 30 seconds. Add tomato paste and spices and cook for 2 minutes, stirring, until darkened to the color of a brick. Blend sauce after simmering.
- Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and heat over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Blend until smooth with an immersion blender or in an upright blender, if desired.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
Notes
- Storage: Put cooled sauce in an airtight container like a glass jar or bottle, then store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
