Matcha Latte

A Matcha Latte blends finely sifted green tea powder with hot water and steamed milk, creating a creamy and mildly vegetal beverage. The traditional method uses a bamboo whisk to produce a frothy texture, while a modern approach employs an electric frother for convenience. Optional sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup balance the slight bitterness of matcha. Adjusting the powder quantity and choosing different milk types allow personalization of strength and creaminess.

Traditional method:
    Cup of Yum
  1. Use a chashaku (bamboo tea scoop) to add the matcha powder to sieve placed over a chawan (tea bowl).
  2. Sift the matcha into a chawan (tea bowl) to remove any clumps.
  3. Pour about ¼ C hot water (about 80°C/176°F, not boiling hot) into the chawan (tea bowl) and gently press the chasen (matcha whisk) against the bottom of the bowl.
  4. Move the chasen in a zig zag motion until the liquid becomes foamy.
  5. Add remaining hot water and steamed, frothed milk of your choice.
  6. Sweeten with honey, simple syrup, maple syrup, or sweetener of your choice, to your taste.
Modern method:
  1. Sift the matcha powder into a large mug to remove any clumps.
  2. Pour hot water (about 80°C/176°F, not boiling hot) into the mug.
  3. Use an electric whisk/frother to foam up the matcha tea.
  4. Top the matcha off with steamed, frothed milk of your choice and sweeten to your taste.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of matcha powder to suit your taste, increasing for a stronger flavor or reducing if new to matcha.
  • Sift the matcha powder before whisking to prevent clumps and create a smooth latte.
  • Select your preferred milk—dairy or plant-based—and steam or froth it to add creaminess.
  • Choose a sweetener like honey, simple syrup, or maple syrup to balance the slight bitterness, or omit if preferred.
  • Use water heated to around 80°C (176°F) to avoid burning the matcha and to preserve its delicate flavor.
  • Experiment with different matcha grades to find the flavor profile you enjoy most.
