Matcha Waffles
These Matcha Waffles combine the distinctive grassy flavor of ceremonial matcha powder into a classic waffle batter including buttermilk, egg, and vanilla for a tender, lightly crisp waffle with a delicate green hue. The texture is slightly crisp on the outside and soft inside, with a subtle sweetness balanced by the earthiness of matcha. The recipe yields about two round Belgian waffles, ideal for a unique breakfast or snack.
Ingredients
- 1 egg large
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil neutral
- 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 C buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon matcha sifted, ceremonial
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ⅛ salt sea salt
- 1 C all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp potato starch
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, oil, sugar, buttermilk and vanilla extract.
- Sift in the matcha powder, baking soda, baking powder and sea salt.
- Add in the all-purpose flour and potato starch and fold until just combined. (Be careful not to overmix).
- Preheat a waffle iron to medium heat.
- Ladle in about 1 C of batter into the waffle iron, close it and cook for about 4-5 minutes, until lightly golden and crisp.
- Remove the waffle and let cool on a cooling rack.
Notes
- This recipe yields about two large round Belgian waffles.
