Matcha Waffles

These Matcha Waffles combine the distinctive grassy flavor of ceremonial matcha powder into a classic waffle batter including buttermilk, egg, and vanilla for a tender, lightly crisp waffle with a delicate green hue. The texture is slightly crisp on the outside and soft inside, with a subtle sweetness balanced by the earthiness of matcha. The recipe yields about two round Belgian waffles, ideal for a unique breakfast or snack.

Description

Matcha Waffles are prepared by whisking together egg, vegetable oil, sugar, buttermilk, and vanilla extract, creating a moist and flavorful base. Sifted ceremonial matcha powder is added along with leavening agents—baking soda and baking powder—and a pinch of sea salt to balance the flavors. The dry ingredients, including all-purpose flour and potato starch, are folded in to produce a batter that yields crisp yet tender waffles.

The waffles cook in a preheated waffle iron until lightly golden and crisp on the outside, with a tender interior. The matcha imparts a mild, slightly bitter green tea flavor that contrasts with the sweetness, resulting in a complex taste.

These waffles work well as a special breakfast or afternoon treat and can be served plain or with complementary toppings like whipped cream, syrup, or fresh fruit to balance the matcha’s natural bitterness.

The recipe makes approximately two round Belgian waffles, suitable for serving one or two people.
