Mexican Hot Chocolate
Mexican Hot Chocolate combines milk, cacao powder, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and chili powder, simmered together with bittersweet chocolate until smooth. This beverage has a rich, thick texture with warm spices and a subtle spicy kick. It can be topped with whipped cream for added richness.
Ingredients
- 4 cups milk dairy or dairy-free
- 3 tablespoons cacao powder
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon chili powder
- 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate finely chopped
- Whipped Cream optional topping
Instructions
- Simmer the ingredients. In a saucepan over medium heat, bring the milk, cacao powder, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and chili powder to a simmer. Stir until there's no clumps.
- Add the chocolate. Add the finely chopped chocolate and whisk for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until the hot chocolate is smooth.
- Serve. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs, and if you'd like, add your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Expect some chocolate to settle in the bottom of the mug; this is normal with real chocolate.
- Monitor the milk carefully during heating to prevent boiling over.
- Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra spiciness if desired.
- Using full-fat milk makes the hot chocolate creamier than nut milks.
