Mulled Wine Recipe
This Mulled Wine Recipe blends red wine with orange juice, citrus slices, sugar, and fragrant spices like cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. It’s gently heated to infuse the flavors without boiling, resulting in a warm, spiced beverage often served during cooler months. The combination provides a fragrant, sweet, and mildly spiced drink perfect for sharing at gatherings or cozy evenings.
Ingredients
- 2 (750 mL) bottles red wine (see note 1)
- 3/4 cup orange juice (see note 2)
- 2 orange sliced into wheels and halved, plus more for garnish
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar or honey or maple syrup, or less to taste (see note 3)
- 12 whole cloves (see note 4)
- 4 cinnamon stick plus more for garnish
- 4 star anise plus more for garnish
Instructions
- In a large non-aluminum pot over medium-low heat, combine wine, orange juice, orange slices, sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Simmer until steam begins to rise from the pot and the mixture is hot, about 10 minutes (do not boil).
- Strain (or remove spice bundle) and keep warm over low heat until ready to serve. Serve warm garnished with orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and star anise if desired.
Notes
- Choose a bold red wine such as Malbec, Syrah, or Cabernet Sauvignon for best flavor.
- Sweeten with your preferred sugar or syrup, adjusting to taste depending on wine sweetness.
- Spices can be added directly or bundled in cheesecloth for easy removal.
- Mulled wine keeps refrigerated up to a week; reheat gently before serving.
