Old Fashioned Recipe

Sophisticated, classic, bold, and smooth - the old fashioned has always been my go-to cocktail order. But once I realized how simple it is to make at home, it quickly became a staple in my own kitchen! With just five simple ingredients, let me guide you through my tried and true old fashioned recipe so you can sip in style, too.

Instructions

  1. Add the sugar, cold water, and bitters to a cocktail shaker and stir until the sugar has mostly dissolved.
  2. Add a few handfuls of ice and the whiskey and stir for 30 seconds.
  3. Add a large ice cube to a rocks glass, run the orange peel over the edge of the glass, then put the peel into the glass. Strain the cocktail into the glass and garnish with a Luxardo cherry.

Notes

  • Note 1: Feel free to substitute another type of sugar. Maple syrup works really well!
  • Note 2: Angostura bitters are found in most grocery stores. For a slightly different taste, try black walnut bitters or orange bitters.

  • Note 3: For this recipe, choose your favorite type of whiskey. I love bourbon, so that's what I normally reach for, but rye is nice, too.
  • Note 4: Rubbing the orange peel on the rim of the glass is a simple way to elevate this drink. You'll be able to smell it every time you take a sip.
  • Note 5: I love Luxardo-style cherries, which are basically fancy maraschino cherries. You can use regular maraschino cherries if you like those instead.
