Orange Jam Swirl Cookies

Orange Jam Swirl Cookies are buttery, tender cookies with a bright orange flavor from fresh zest and juice combined in the dough, complemented by a swirl of sweet orange jam. These rolled cookies offer a balance between soft crumb and fruity jam bursts, also allowing for freezing before baking to maintain shape and convenience.

Description

This cookie recipe starts with a blend of softened unsalted butter and sugar beaten to a fluffy texture, enriched with egg, fresh orange zest from two oranges, and juice from one. The dry ingredients—flour, baking powder, and salt—are folded in gently to create a dough that is chilled to firm up for easier rolling and cutting. The dough is divided, rolled out into rectangles, spread evenly with orange jam, then rolled into logs.

Freezing the jam-covered dough logs half-frozen makes them easier to slice into uniform cookie rounds. Baking at 350°F produces cookies with tender centers and the sweet tang of orange jam distributed in swirls throughout the crumb. The jam adds a moist, fruity contrast to the buttery cookie base.

These cookies store well at room temperature for up to five days in an airtight container and can be frozen for up to three months, keeping neatly between layers of wax paper. The recipe recommends using organic, unwaxed oranges for zesting to avoid bitterness and encourages a kitchen scale for accuracy.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 200 g butter softened, 7 oz/ ¾ cup + 1 tablespoon, unsalted
  • 100 g granulated sugar 3.5 oz/ ½ cup
  • 1 egg
  • 2 orange zest of both, and juice of one (55 ml/ 1.8 fl.oz/ ¼ cup), Note 2
  • 250 g all-purpose flour 9 oz/ 2 cups
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • salt a pinch
  • 6 tablespoons orange jam Note 3

Instructions

Cookie dough:

  1. Oranges: Wash, dry, and zest the oranges, but juice only one of them.
  2. Beat the soft butter and the sugar in a large bowl until pale and fluffy. Add the egg, orange zest, and juice of 1 orange. Mix well.
  3. Mix flour, salt, and baking powder in another bowl. Fold them into the butter mixture.
  4. Combine quickly to form a dough, don’t overmix it.
  5. Refrigerate dough: Form a ball, flatten it a bit, wrap it in plastic and refrigerate it for about 2 hours or until firm enough to roll.

Fill and cut:

  1. Flour the working surface and the rolling pin.
  2. Roll half of the dough into a rectangle. Spread ½ of the jam evenly on the dough and roll it into a sausage. Repeat with the other half of the dough.
  3. Freeze cookie rolls: Wrap the rolls in plastic and place them in the freezer until about half frozen, my rolls needed about 1 ½ hour to reach a good cutting consistency.

Bake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 350°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Remove the rolls from the freezer. Press them back into a nice shape if they have flattened at the bottom side.
  3. Cut cookies: Unwrap and cut them into slices using a sharp knife. You will have about 30 cookies.
  4. Bake: Place the swirl cookies on the prepared baking sheets and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden.
  5. Rest: Remove the trays from the oven but leave the cookies on the tray for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use a digital kitchen scale for accurate measurements to ensure consistent baking results.
  • Prefer organic, unwaxed oranges for zesting to avoid bitterness from wax coatings.
  • Orange jam imparts bright citrus flavor, but marmalade or other jams can be substituted with a less pronounced orange taste.
  • Freeze cookie rolls before slicing to ease cutting and help maintain shape.
  • Cookies keep fresh for about 5 days at room temperature and freeze well for up to 3 months in an airtight container.
