Pickling Spices

Homemade Pickling Spices are easy to make and have loads more flavor than the store bought version.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon whole allspice berries
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 5-6 star anise pods
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 tick cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon whole peppercorns , white or black
  • 1 tablespoon whole cardamom pods
  • 1 tablespoon whole mustard seeds optional ,brown or yellow
  • 3 large bay leaves optional, crumbled
  • 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes optional

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Combine allspice, coriander, ginger, star anise, cloves and cinnamon in small skillet. Heat over low heat, gently toasting for approximately 5 minutes.
  2. Transfer to a small bowl or mortar. Add remaining ingredients and grind together gently.
  3. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.
