Pumpkin Pie Spice Recipe

This easy recipe for homemade pumpkin pie spice is perfect for fall baking and holiday baking. This cozy spice blend adds a warming flavor to pumpkin pies, pumpkin rolls, and any pumpkin dessert. You can also use this spice mixture in apple pie, spice granola, or overnight oats for breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 4 cinnamon sticks about 4 inches each
  • 2 tablespoons ground ginger
  • 1 whole nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon cardamom pods or ½ teaspoon black peppercorns

Instructions

  1. Break cinnamon sticks into small pieces.
  2. Toast cinnamon pieces, whole nutmeg, and cloves in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Let cool completely.
  3. Grind cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a spice grinder.
  4. Measure 2 tablespoons of the ground cinnamon mixture.
  5. Mix with 2 tablespoons ground ginger.
  6. If using, grind and add ½ teaspoon cardamom or ¼ teaspoon black pepper.
  7. Store in an airtight container.
  8. Use 1-2 teaspoons per recipe as needed.

Notes

  • This recipe yields about ¼ cup of pumpkin pie spice. Double the quantities to make a larger batch. You can substitute this homemade spice for store-bought pumpkin spice in any recipe. This blend can also be used as a substitute for apple pie spice. Make sure to check your spice cabinet and the expiration dates on your ground spices before starting.
