Salty Dog Cocktail Recipe
The Salty Dog cocktail is a refreshing mixed drink combining gin or vodka with fresh grapefruit juice served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass. A wedge of grapefruit and a sprig of thyme garnish add aroma and visual appeal to this classic citrus beverage.
Ingredients
- salt for the rim
- 2 ounces gin see notes, or vodka
- 4 ounces grapefruit juice
- grapefruit to serve, wedge; fresh
- thyme to serve, wedge; fresh
Instructions
- Wet the rim of a glass by running a cut piece of grapefruit (or another citrus) along the rim then dip the wet rim into salt. Fill the glass with ice.
- Pour the gin or vodka into the glass then top with grapefruit juice. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and some fresh herbs - we especially like using thyme.
Notes
- Use a 10-ounce highball glass filled with ice for traditional serving size.
- For a lighter drink, serve in a rocks glass with 1 ounce of spirit and 2 ounces of grapefruit juice.
- Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice enhances the cocktail’s brightness compared to bottled juice.
- Thyme garnish provides an aromatic complement but can be omitted if unavailable.
- Salt rim is made by wetting glass rim with grapefruit wedge before dipping into salt.
