Salty Dog Cocktail Recipe

The Salty Dog cocktail is a refreshing mixed drink combining gin or vodka with fresh grapefruit juice served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass. A wedge of grapefruit and a sprig of thyme garnish add aroma and visual appeal to this classic citrus beverage.

Description

This cocktail features a salted rim on a highball or rocks glass, created by running a grapefruit wedge around the edge and dipping it in salt. Fill the glass with ice, pour in 2 ounces of gin or vodka, and then add 4 ounces of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. The mixture is light and tart, with the salted rim enhancing the grapefruit’s citrus notes. The drink is garnished with a fresh grapefruit wedge and a sprig of thyme which adds subtle herbal fragrance.

Varying the amounts by using smaller glassware allows adjustment of alcohol strength and serving size. The combination of citrus, spirit, and salt makes the Salty Dog both crisp and refreshing, suitable for a casual or sophisticated setting. It’s simple to prepare yet delivers a balanced profile.

The drink is traditionally served in a 10-ounce highball glass but can be adapted to personal preference with smaller glasses or less alcohol. Fresh grapefruit juice is preferred for the best flavor, and thyme garnish adds an aromatic layer.
