Sautéed Mushrooms and Onions
Sautéed Mushrooms and Onions combine sliced brown or white mushrooms with sweet yellow onions, cooked in olive oil and butter until soft and browned. Seasoned with garlic, dried thyme, salt, and pepper, this side dish offers a rich, earthy flavor and tender texture, ideal as an accompaniment to many meals.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 1 pound brown mushrooms sliced, or white mushrooms
- 1 large onion sliced, sweet yellow
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme dried
Instructions
- Ad the olive oil and butter to a large skillet set over medium-high heat.
- Add the mushrooms to the pan, stir and saute for 4 to 5 minutes without disturbing.
- Reduce the heat to medium and add the onion, garlic, salt, pepper and thyme. Cook for an additional 6 to 7 minutes, or until the mushrooms and onions are soft and nicely browned.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve as desired.
Notes
- Dried thyme can be substituted with Italian seasoning, basil, or herbs de Provence.
- Add diced bell peppers during cooking for additional flavor and texture.
- Store leftovers in a shallow airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
- For longer storage, freeze cooled mushrooms and onions in a freezer bag for up to 3 months and reheat from frozen on the stove over medium-high heat.
