Shrimp Étouffée
Shrimp Étouffée features shrimp simmered in a rich roux-based sauce with a mirepoix of onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. Tomato paste and Cajun seasoning bring depth and a mild heat, balanced with butter and olive oil to create a velvety texture. The dish is traditionally served over cooked rice, making a hearty and flavorful meal with a blend of smoky, savory, and spicy notes.
Ingredients
- 8 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 4 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 yellow onion , chopped finely
- 1 green bell pepper , chopped finely
- 4 celery chopped finely, stalks
- 3 cloves garlic . chopped finely
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 2 teaspoons hot sauce
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper coarse ground
- 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
- 2 pounds Shrimp , peeled and deveined (13-15 count)
Instructions
- To a large dutch oven add the butter, olive oil, chopped onion, bell pepper, celery and garlic on medium-low heat for 5-7 minutes stirring occasionally until the onions are translucent.
- Add in the flour and stir until it is completely absorbed then add in the tomato paste, hot sauce, water, salt, black pepper, cajun seasoning and shrimp and simmer for 15 minutes over medium heat until the shrimp is cooked through then serve over scoops of cooked rice.
