Shrimp Étouffée

Shrimp Étouffée features shrimp simmered in a rich roux-based sauce with a mirepoix of onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. Tomato paste and Cajun seasoning bring depth and a mild heat, balanced with butter and olive oil to create a velvety texture. The dish is traditionally served over cooked rice, making a hearty and flavorful meal with a blend of smoky, savory, and spicy notes.

Description

This Shrimp Étouffée recipe starts with sweating finely chopped onions, green bell pepper, celery, and garlic in butter and olive oil to build the base flavors. A flour roux is then incorporated, absorbing the vegetables and thickening the sauce. Tomato paste adds richness and color, while hot sauce and Cajun seasoning provide well-measured heat and seasoning. The shrimp cooks in the sauce during a fifteen-minute simmer, resulting in tender seafood infused with the spicy, smooth, and savory sauce.

The resulting dish has a creamy and thickened consistency characteristic of étouffée, with balanced layers of aromatic vegetables and spices. Serving it on white rice allows the rice to absorb the flavorful sauce and enhances the dish's heartiness.

This recipe requires attention to simmer time to avoid overcooking shrimp, ensuring a tender texture while allowing flavors to meld. The use of a combination of butter and olive oil provides richness without overpowering the shrimp and vegetables.
