Southern Coleslaw Recipe
Southern Coleslaw is a creamy salad made with shredded cabbage, carrot, and green onions mixed into a tangy dressing featuring mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, buttermilk, Dijon mustard, celery seed, and dill. The combination produces a crisp, fresh texture with a balance between sweet, sour, and savory notes typical of Southern-style coleslaw. It works well as a side dish for barbecue, picnic meals, or as a refreshing addition to sandwiches.
Ingredients
- 1 pound cabbage about half a small cabbage, shredded, 450g
- 1 carrot shredded, small
- 3 green onions finely sliced
Dressing
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise 115g
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 1/2 tbsp white sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsp buttermilk
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp celery seed
- 1-2 tsp dill dried
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Mix together the first 3 ingredients in a large bowl and set aside.
- In another bowl, mix together all the dressing ingredients until combined.
- Combine the 2 bowls and mix all together until combined.
- Let sit for 60 minutes for the flavors to blend in refrigerator, stir again and then serve.
Notes
- Store the coleslaw in the refrigerator until serving to keep it fresh and crisp.
- Premade coleslaw mix can be used for convenience without compromising much on texture.
- For finer texture, shred the cabbage more finely or use a food processor.
- Include celery seeds or celery salt to enhance traditional Southern coleslaw flavor.
