Southern Coleslaw Recipe

Southern Coleslaw is a creamy salad made with shredded cabbage, carrot, and green onions mixed into a tangy dressing featuring mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, buttermilk, Dijon mustard, celery seed, and dill. The combination produces a crisp, fresh texture with a balance between sweet, sour, and savory notes typical of Southern-style coleslaw. It works well as a side dish for barbecue, picnic meals, or as a refreshing addition to sandwiches.

Description

This Southern Coleslaw Recipe uses shredded cabbage, carrot, and green onions as its base vegetables. The dressing combines mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, buttermilk, Dijon mustard, celery seed, and dried dill to create a creamy, tangy flavor profile. After mixing the vegetables, the dressing is blended in, and the slaw is refrigerated for an hour to allow flavors to meld and the texture to soften slightly while retaining crispness.

The finished coleslaw is suitable as a side for rich, smoky dishes or as a topping for sandwiches and burgers. Its mild sweetness and acidity help balance plate flavors. Using premade coleslaw mix or finely chopping cabbage is acceptable for convenience without greatly affecting texture.

Keep the coleslaw refrigerated until serving to maintain freshness. The flavor develops best after resting refrigerated for about an hour. Celery seed or celery salt enhances the classic flavor, and chopping cabbage extra fine can add silkiness to the texture if desired.

  • For finer texture, shred the cabbage more finely or use a food processor.
  • Include celery seeds or celery salt to enhance traditional Southern coleslaw flavor.
