Spicy skinny margarita
  • 2 ounces spicy tequila
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • ½ ounce agave nectar amber agave preferable
  • dried orange slice or lime wheel for garnish

Instructions

Chili-infused spicy tequila
    Cup of Yum
  1. Slice your chili pepper and put it into a clean glass jar with 2 ounces of tequila per cocktail. Leave the jar in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
  2. Strain out the pepper and seeds.
  3. If not using right away, store the spicy tequila in a cool, dark place.
Spicy margarita salt
  1. Combine the salt and chipotle powder on a small plate.
  2. Rub the lime wedge around the outside of half of the glass.
  3. Hold the glass at a 45 degree angle and rotate the outside edge of the glass into the spicy salt. Tap off any excess.
Cocktail
  1. Combine the spicy tequila, lime juice, and agave nectar in your cocktail shaker with a handful of ice. Shake for 10 seconds if serving your margarita over ice. Shake for 15 seconds if you are serving it neat.
  2. Double strain into your prepared glass, garnish with the dehydrated orange slice or lime wheel, and enjoy!

Notes

  • There are several ways to make a spicy margarita. Infusing tequila takes a bit of time, but gives you more complex flavor.
  • Use jalapeño to make a cocktail that's just a little spicy.  Or make this skinny spicy margarita even spicier by using hotter peppers.
  • The classic teaching is that cocktails with only liquor should be stirred, and cocktails with citrus juices should be shaken in order to aerate the cocktail.
  • Rim only half the glass with the spicy salt to give you and your guests an option of sipping this spicy skinny margarita with and without salt.
  • Using an orange slice gives you the orange scent and flavor that's missing without the Cointreau.
