Spicy Sloppy Joe's with Jalapenos

These spicy jalapeno sloppy joes bring the heat to this classic childhood recipe. Made with spicy tomato sauce and fresh jalapenos this flavorful ground beef recipe is ready in about 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1.25 Pounds ground beef
  • ½ sweet onion diced
  • 2 jalapeños diced
  • 12 Ounce spicy tomato sauce like Arrabbiata
  • 1 Tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 Tablespoons mustard Yellow or Spicy
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt Or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • Fried Jalapenos Option topping
  • 6 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium-high heat. 
  2. Add the chopped jalapeno and onion to the skillet and cook until just softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet. Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer.
  5. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  6. While the sauce simmers, prepare your hamburger buns. Toast them lightly if desired.
  7. Spoon the warm sloppy joe mixture onto the buns and top with the optional fried jalapenos or your favorite toppings.
