Spritz Cookies

Spritz Cookies are a tender, buttery cookie that gets its distinctive shapes from pressing the dough through a cookie press. The combination of butter, powdered sugar, and a touch of vanilla creates a rich, delicate flavor. Adding milk powder optionally enhances the texture, while cornstarch contributes to a soft, crumbly bite. Holiday-themed sprinkles decorate the cookies, making them visually festive and appealing for special occasions or gift-giving.

Description

The Spritz Cookies recipe features a dough made by creaming room temperature butter with powdered sugar, egg yolk, salt, and vanilla extract, which provides a creamy base. Adding milk and optionally milk powder balances moisture and structure. Incorporating all-purpose flour with cornstarch yields a soft dough that presses easily into festive shapes without spreading much during baking. Chilling the dough ensures the cookies keep their form.

Baked at 350°F (176°C) for around 15 minutes until very lightly browned, the cookies have a delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a subtle sweetness. The festive sprinkles give a seasonal touch right before baking.

These cookies are ideal for holiday gatherings or as thoughtful homemade gifts. They serve well alongside tea or coffee. The recipe’s metric measurements help achieve consistent results, especially important for delicate textures in baking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 10 oz (350g) butter room temperature, unsalted
  • 3 oz (90g) powdered sugar + 1 heaping Tablespoon
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk full cream milk, whole
  • 3 tablespoons milk powder optional, baking
  • 11 oz (320g) all-purpose flour
  • 4 oz (125g) cornstarch 110 g or 1/2 cup + 1/3 cup
  • Sprinkles holiday-themed

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, using a handheld mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter with the sugar, egg yolk, salt, and vanilla extract until fluffy. Add the milk and baking powder (if using), and mix well.
  2. Slowly add in the all-purpose flour and cornstarch, beating until the dough becomes soft and no longer sticks to your hands.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  4. Transfer the cookie dough to a cookie press, following the manufacturer's instructions. Choose a festive disk, such as a Christmas tree. Press out the cookies onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Sprinkle the tops of the cookies with festive sprinkles.
  5. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets and bake for 15 minutes, or until they turn very light brown and the insides are cooked through. Allow the cookies to cool on a rack. Store them in an airtight container.
