Taco Sloppy Joes
Taco Sloppy Joes combine ground turkey cooked with onions, garlic, and tomato sauce, seasoned with taco seasoning, cumin, and mild diced green chiles, then mixed with black beans. Served on soft hamburger buns with optional toppings like cheese, lettuce, and salsa, this recipe offers a flavorful twist on the classic sloppy joe with familiar southwestern spices and hearty components.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion diced
- 1 large clove garlic finely minced
- 1 lb. ground turkey I used 99% fat free
- 15 oz tomato sauce 1 can) just the plain stuff
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 small can green chiles mild, diced
- 1/4 cup taco seasoning which is 1 packet, mild
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 1 can black beans rinsed and drained
- 6 hamburger buns soft
any desired toppings:
- cheddar cheese grated
- lettuce
- tomato
- guacamole
- onion
- sour cream
- salsa etc.
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion for 3-4 minutes or until they start to soften. Add in garlic and turkey. Break apart turkey as it browns.
- Once the turkey is cooked through, stir in tomato sauce, water, green chiles, taco seasoning, cumin, salt, and pepper. Bring to boil and then reduce to simmer. Cook half covered for 10 minutes.
- Stir in beans and cook another 2-3 minutes until heated through. Spoon mixture onto warm hamburger buns and top with any desired toppings. Serve immediately.
