Tartare Sauce
Tartare Sauce is a classic cold condiment made by combining mayonnaise, finely chopped pickles and capers, parsley, and a touch of pickling juice with optional mustard powder. This simple yet flavorful sauce offers a creamy texture with a tangy, savory taste that pairs well with fried and seafood dishes or as a dip.
Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise or dairy free vegan mayonnaise, 250g
- 2 tablespoon capers rinsed and chopped
- 2 tablespoon pickles all work well, finely chopped; or gherkins or cornichons
- 1 tablespoon parsley finely chopped, fresh
- 1 tablespoon pickling juice gherkins, from the capers or pickles
- ¼ teaspoon mustard powder optional
- salt sea salt
- black pepper sea salt
Instructions
- To make this tartare sauce, simply mix all ingredients together well. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Notes
- Substitute fresh dill for parsley to vary the flavor.
- Use lemon or lime juice instead of pickle juice for a citrusy tang.
- To lighten the sauce, blend half mayonnaise with plain Greek yogurt or a vegan alternative.
- Increase or omit capers based on availability; extra chopped pickles can be used instead.
- Serve with fish and chips, vegetable fritters, or as a dip for fries and roasted vegetables.
