Tennessee Onions

Tennessee Onions are baked slices of sweet onions layered with a blend of shredded sharp cheddar, mozzarella, and grated parmesan cheeses, seasoned with garlic salt and pepper. The dish is cooked until the cheese is bubbly and browned, resulting in a savory, cheesy side with tender yet slightly crisp onions.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 whole onions or any sweet onion will do, Vidalia
  • 4 tablespoon butter unsalted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 Cup cheddar cheese the better quality, the better taste, shredded sharp
  • 1 Cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ½ cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • oregano fresh, or other herbs for garnish

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Using non-stick cooking spray, prepare a 9x9 (or 9x13) baking dish.
  2. Heat oven to 350
  3. Slice the Vidalia onions in ¼ to ½ inch slices and separate the rings.
  4. Lay the rings in the prepared baking dish
  5. Sprinkle the onion rings with garlic salt (about 1 tsp), pepper (about ½ tsp).
  6. Cut the butter into pats and place around the dish on top of the onions.
  7. Spread the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses on top of the onions and then top with the grated parmesan cheese.
  8. Bake at 350 uncovered for 30 minutes or until bubbly and the cheese has started to brown (browned cheese bits is one of the best parts!)
  9. Remove from the oven, allow to cool for a few minutes, garnish with some fresh herbs (oregano, chives, thyme all work well)  and then serve.

Notes

  • Serve Tennessee Onions as a side to hamburgers, steak, or as a vegetarian option at cookouts.
  • Use sweet onions like Vidalias or Texas Sweets cut into ½ inch thick slices for best texture and flavor.
  • Ensure even thickness of slices and separate rings for consistent cooking.
  • Select high-quality sharp cheddar and other cheeses for the best taste impact.
  • Check seasoning; the cheese and garlic salt contribute saltiness so adjust accordingly.
