The BEST Marinated Tofu (Ginger Tofu)

This marinated tofu recipe features extra-firm tofu slices soaked in a ginger and garlic marinade blended with orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and oils. The tofu gains a balanced sweet, tangy, and savory flavor infused by the marinade, then baked until golden and tender. Fresh green onions and cilantro add brightness to the final dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 extra firm tofu 16-ounce package
  • 1 cup orange juice fresh
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • ⅓ cup soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 4 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 3 garlic minced, cloves
  • 1 tablespoon ginger grated
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ¼ cup green onion chopped
  • ¼ cup cilantro chopped

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Turn the tofu onto its side lengthwise and cut it into slices. Then, cut those slices into 2 triangles. This should yield between 8-16 triangles.
  2. For the marinade ingredients, combine the orange juice, vinegar, soy sauce, oils, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes in a bowl and whisk.
  3. Lay the tofu in a glass baking dish in a single layer and pour the marinade over until the tofu is completely submerged. Evenly sprinkle the green onion and cilantro on top of the tofu. Allow the marinade to sit for at least 30 minutes and up to overnight if you have the patience that I do not possess.
  4. Then, preheat the oven to 350F/160C. Pour out a portion of the marinade so that the tofu is only about halfway submerged. Put it in the oven for about 40 to 45 minutes, until the baked tofu is golden and most of the marinade has been absorbed.

Notes

  • Extra-firm tofu works best to maintain shape during marinating and baking; softer varieties may crumble.
  • Marinate the tofu overnight when possible to maximize flavor absorption.
  • Adjust the marinade by increasing orange juice, soy sauce, vinegar, or red pepper flakes to fit your taste preferences.
