Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 1/2 cup salted butter softened
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 teaspoons minced garlic 
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  1. Preheat your oven broiler. Adjust the oven rack so it is 6–8 inches below the broiler element.
  2. Slice the French bread in half lengthwise and place both halves cut side up on a baking sheet.
  3. In a medium bowl, use a fork or spoon to combine softened butter, olive oil, dried basil, oregano, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Stir until thoroughly mixed and smooth.
  4. Spread the butter mixture in a generous, even layer over the cut sides of the bread.
  5. Place the baking sheet under the broiler. Broil the bread until the edges turn golden brown and the surface is bubbly, about 2–5 minutes. Watch it closely because how fast it cooks is dependent on how hot your broiler is and how close your rack is to the heating element.
  6. Remove the bread from the oven and slice into pieces for serving.

  • Bread Options: Feel free to use French bread, Italian bread, ciabatta, sourdough, sub rolls, or even sliced sandwich bread for this recipe.
  • Broiling Tips: Broilers can vary in intensity and may have hot spots. Rotate the baking sheet as needed to ensure even browning. Watch closely as the bread can brown quickly.
  • Baking Option: If you don’t have a broiler, bake the bread at 450°F for 8-10 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
