Tofu Tacos
These tofu tacos use baked extra firm tofu combined with sautéed red onion, red bell pepper, and a blend of spices including cumin, chili powder, and smoked paprika. Served on toasted corn tortillas and garnished with lettuce and diced tomatoes, they offer a flavorful plant-based filling with pleasantly charred components and fresh toppings.
Ingredients
- 14 ounce tofu extra firm, package of
- 1 cup onion red, chopped
- ½ bell pepper red; chopped
- 2 garlic cloves
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- smoked paprika pinch
- salt pinch
- 1 tablespoon of oil
- 8 corn tortillas
- lettuce chopped; handful
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and lightly grease a baking sheet.
- Slice tofu into 1-inch cubes and bake for 10 minutes.
- In a food processor, combine tofu, onion, bell pepper, garlic, soy sauce, cumin, chili powder, paprika, and salt.
- In a large pan and over high heat, add oil, followed by the tofu mixture. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Toast the tortillas directly on the gas burner or in a pan. Lay tortillas on a plate and add a generous serving spoonful of the tofu mixture to each tortilla.
- Garnish tacos with lettuce and tomatoes.
Notes
- For smokier flavor, lightly char the onion and red pepper under a broiler before mixing.
- Char tortillas briefly over a gas burner for authentic flavor and texture.
- Keep tortillas warm by wrapping them in a kitchen towel or tortilla warmer, or wrapped in foil in a 300°F (150°C) oven.
- Add lime juice and cilantro as garnish for additional flavor layers.
