Tofu Vegetable Crispy Wontons [Deep-Fried + Air Fried]

This recipe creates crispy wontons filled with a savory mix of crumbled tofu, minced onion, and carrot marinated in teriyaki and soy sauces. The filling is cooked first to develop flavor and remove moisture before being wrapped in wonton skins and deep-fried or air-fried to a golden brown. The result is a crunchy exterior encasing a well-seasoned, tender filling, ideal as a snack or appetizer served with sweet and sour sauce.

Ingredients

  • ½ medium yellow onion
  • 1 small carrot
  • ½ block tofu drained and pressed, extra firm
  • ¼ cup teriyaki sauce
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 1 wonton wraps
  • cooking oil for deep frying
  • sweet and sour sauce optional, for dipping

Instructions

    Cup of Yum
  1. Mince the onion and the carrot in a food processor.
  2. Add the pressed tofu to a large bowl with the teriyaki and soy sauce. Marinate for 10 minutes.
  3. Coat the bottom of a pan with oil and heat to medium-high. Add minced carrot, onion, tofu and any excess sauce to the skillet.
  4. Using a ladle, crush the tofu until it's crumbly. Constantly flip until the ground tofu mixture is thoroughly cooked. When finished cooking, let cool.
  5. Once the mixture has cooled, apply 1 tablespoon of the mixture in the center of a wonton wrap. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle using a small amount of water to seal the tofu mixture in. Repeat as many times as necessary.
  6. On medium-high heat, fry the wontons until both sides are lightly browned, set aside the finished wontons to cool.

Notes

  • Keep a bowl of water nearby to help seal the wonton wrappers effectively.
  • The simple triangle fold can be varied by trying other shapes like bringing all four corners together for a different appearance.
  • Avoid overcrowding the oil or air fryer basket to prevent steaming and maintain crispiness.
  • Press tofu thoroughly to remove excess moisture, helping the filling hold together.
  • Sweet and sour sauce pairs well for dipping but is optional.
