Tofu Vegetable Crispy Wontons [Deep-Fried + Air Fried]
Description
Tofu Vegetable Crispy Wontons combine minced onion and carrot with crumbled pressed tofu marinated in soy and teriyaki sauces to deliver a savory, umami-rich filling. The mixture is cooked in a pan until thoroughly done and moisture is reduced, ensuring the filling holds together well inside the wonton wrappers. The mixture is then cooled to make shaping the wontons easier.
Each wonton is folded simply into a triangle sealed with water, then fried on medium-high heat until both sides are lightly browned or air-fried for a crisp texture with less oil. This process creates wontons with crunchy, golden shells while preserving the tasting notes of the cooked tofu and vegetables inside.
These wontons serve well as an appetizer or snack paired with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. Tips include using a bowl of water to help seal the wrappers and avoiding overcrowding in the fryer or air fryer to maintain the correct cooking temperature and crispness.
Ingredients
- ½ medium yellow onion
- 1 small carrot
- ½ block tofu drained and pressed, extra firm
- ¼ cup teriyaki sauce
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 1 wonton wraps
- cooking oil for deep frying
- sweet and sour sauce optional, for dipping
Instructions
- Mince the onion and the carrot in a food processor.
- Add the pressed tofu to a large bowl with the teriyaki and soy sauce. Marinate for 10 minutes.
- Coat the bottom of a pan with oil and heat to medium-high. Add minced carrot, onion, tofu and any excess sauce to the skillet.
- Using a ladle, crush the tofu until it's crumbly. Constantly flip until the ground tofu mixture is thoroughly cooked. When finished cooking, let cool.
- Once the mixture has cooled, apply 1 tablespoon of the mixture in the center of a wonton wrap. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle using a small amount of water to seal the tofu mixture in. Repeat as many times as necessary.
- On medium-high heat, fry the wontons until both sides are lightly browned, set aside the finished wontons to cool.
Notes
- Keep a bowl of water nearby to help seal the wonton wrappers effectively.
- The simple triangle fold can be varied by trying other shapes like bringing all four corners together for a different appearance.
- Avoid overcrowding the oil or air fryer basket to prevent steaming and maintain crispiness.
- Press tofu thoroughly to remove excess moisture, helping the filling hold together.
- Sweet and sour sauce pairs well for dipping but is optional.
