Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps
Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps combine seasoned ground turkey cooked with aromatic spices and tomato sauce, served in crisp lettuce leaves for a light, handheld meal option. The filling is spiced with chili powder, cumin, paprika, and garlic, simmered with chicken broth for flavor and moisture. Fresh toppings like tomatoes, onions, avocado, cilantro, and cheese offer customizable textures and tastes making these wraps both nutritious and satisfying.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 3/4 cup chopped yellow onion
- 1 lb ground turkey 95% lean
- 2 cloves garlic
- salt freshly ground
- black pepper freshly ground
- 1 Tbsp chili powder (preferably 2 tsp regular chili powder and 1 tsp ancho chili powder)
- 1 tsp cumin ground
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup chicken broth low-sodium
- lettuce doubled up, for serving, iceberg or romaine, leaves
- Mexican cheese diced Roma tomatoes, diced red onion, diced avocado, chopped cilantro, light sour cream, for serving, shredded
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add onion and saute 2 minutes. Add turkey and garlic, season with salt and pepper, and cook, tossing and breaking up turkey occasionally, until cooked through, about 5 minutes.
- Add chili powder, cumin, paprika, tomato sauce and chicken broth. Reduce to a simmer and cook about 5 minutes until sauce has reduced.
- Serve mixture over lettuce leaves with desired toppings.
Notes
- The filling recipe is adapted from Cooks Illustrated and can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator or freezer, excluding toppings.
- Ground chicken may be used instead of turkey as a substitute.
- Increase heat by adding hot sauce, extra chili powder, or red pepper flakes as desired.
- If romaine lettuce is unavailable, iceberg lettuce works well as an alternative.
- Toppings such as cheese, tomatoes, onion, avocado, cilantro, and sour cream are optional and not included in nutritional estimates.
